AFA GeneS : Topic is: "Getting the most from your Mac's
Operating Software! We'll be getting started in
just a few minutes, so just stand by.
AFL Bear : Tonight is Getting the most from your System!
What tweaks and tricks can we tell you about to
get your Mac running hot. AFA GeneS, our genial
chat host, will you please make the formal
introductions?
AFA GeneS : Let me introduce the remainder of our cast of
characters (and they are characters :) First is
the lovely and talented AFC Carey....and
then the inimitable AFC Pieter, wearing his Nike
shoes as usual.
DBAldrich : I just got a laserwriter and dumped a style
writer. I am using a fax modem to receive
faxes. The laserwriter wants appletalk on (of
course). My communications software (Mac330)
works fine with appletalk on, but if I receive
an incomming call with appletalk on the modem
answers the phone and immediately hangs up.
What is the difference between apple talk on and
off? Could the fax modem software be getting
confused?
AFC Pieter : What Fax software are you using
DBAldrich : fax stf 2.2.3
AFC Pieter : What else are you running? Any other inits?
DBAldrich : Yes, menuchoice, mactools (death) v3.0,
silverlinning
AFC Pieter : Have you tried running with just the STF stuff
and your regular Apple inits?
DBolden : Sorry to butt in, but MenuChoice can be kinda
buggy.
DBAldrich : I have not tried running with menuchoice off.
But, I can receive faxes o.k with appletalk off.
AFL Bear : Is the modem in the modem port and the LW on the
printer port?
DBAldrich : yes
AFL Bear : That doesn't sound like it's related to
AppleTalk, then.
JGreenhut : I have had many problems with fax stf 2.2.3. I
recently upgrade to 3.0 which has solved MANY
problems. 3.0 also includes Line Manager.
Alco Oil : I was going to suggest the upgrade to 3.0 as
well. Are you sure you have the correct ports
selected?
DBAldrich : I will try the upgrade, yes on the ports.
AFA GeneS : My only other suggestion here is that you also
try running with all Extensions other
than...your fax stuff off...as a test.
What kind of Mac do you have?
DBAldrich : SE/30
AFA GeneS : Okay...thanks.
CTI Dan : My question is this, What "tools" are out
there to improve overall system performance
In regard to the boot process, and overall
system function, anything fantastic? ... GA
Alco Oil : Apple Personal diagnostics to test for
problems. Then maybe Norton Utilities 2.0 and
Mactools for other diagnostics and
repairs...Now Utilities also.
AFA GeneS : Alco: It's not released yet...not due till March
according to Apple. Maybe use MacCheck for now.
AFC Carey : RAMDoubler from Connectix to, well, double your
RAM and DiskExpress II from Alsoft to Optimize
your HD (Not an official endorsement) :)
Alco Oil : Does it slow you down?
AFA GeneS : (Alco: RAMDoubler will slow you down up to 5%,
according to Connectix.)
CTI Dan : Perhaps if there was a way to allocate processor
time to each task ...?? GA
AFA GeneS : Dan: Do you have a specific performance problem
that you think needs fixing?
CTI Dan : Serial communications seems to be an issue... I
don't get very good BG performace ...
AFA GeneS : Dan: What kind of Mac do you have? And what do
you see when you're doing serial stuff
(printing, modeming?)
CTI Dan : Gene, Alink dies, and AOL slows to a crawl if I
do anything other than watch AfterDark.
AFA GeneS : What kind of Mac, Dan? What System version?
CTI Dan : It's a Q650 w/ a Quad040, Sys 7.1, Accura
14.4, 40mb RAM.
AFA GeneS : What version of AfterDark?
CTI Dan : The Star Trek edition (my only system folder
toy) :>
AFA GeneS : Have you tried it with other Extensions off (yes
even DayStar's)?
CTI Dan : <gasp> Yes, I have. I've also tried with a
variety of applications, it seems to relate to
how much time the mac allocates to the comm
program. I think :>
AFA GeneS : Can you disable the accelerator card to see if
it's not affecting the process? I mean...there
will be some slowdown, that's normal.
CTI Dan : My feeling is that I should have system
resources to spare. I've tried w and w/o the
Quad installed.
AFA GeneS : The only additional thought: Reinstall system
software. This is something, Dan, that will take
more intensive diagnosis than we can do now.
AFL Bear : I've had a troubling experience with it in that
it seems to be related to machines dropping from
the network and not coming back until after a
restart. This happened on a variety of machines,
but I haven't called tech support yet.
AFA GeneS : You mean RAMDoubler, John?
AFL Bear : Yep. I proved it was the common denominator.
Can't explain it, though.
AFA GeneS : Hmmm. I guess we better wake up Jorg and the
crew at Connectix to work on that one.
AFC Carey : Ick, John. I have not had that problem :)
AFL Bear : I did, on machines that have to stay on 24 hours
a day. It takes three to 8 hours to show up.
Robert2242 : What is the best way to increase the memory to
DAs? Or where to look for info.
AFA GeneS : In theory, you can't, since they have a fixed
memory allocation (20K).
Robert2242 : Run into "out of memory error" while previewing
with DW 550C in a DA.
AFA GeneS : Which DA?
Robert2242 : Global Fax
AFA GeneS : Which version?
Robert2242 : 2.0.8
AFA GeneS : That should be okay. Can you try this with all
Extensions off, other than the Global Village
CDEV? Do I assume, here, that you are printing
your fax with the DeskWriter, by the way?
Robert2242 : Yes, still happens, but on 2nd attempt
AFA GeneS : It could also be the printer driver not being
compatible with something. Do you have the
latest DW software?
Robert2242 : yes
AFA GeneS : (I print from the Global Village DA reasonably
often to a StyleWriter II and LW Pro...no
problem.) Also, do you have other applications
open when you try this? Maybe there's not enough
room for the printer driver to do its stuff.
Robert2242 : It's only a print-preview that has problem
AFA GeneS : If we can't figure it out tonight, you might
want to leave a message in the Global Village
area on AOL. Keyword is Global. Their online
support lady is there every couple of days or so
to tack the messages. And they are very, very
helpful.
BarryP13 : (I thought I read about a conflict with Glob.
fax and new DW software somewhere....)
JGreenhut : MacWeek 1/17/94 page 79: "Apple recently
released a new version of the AppleCD Audio \
Player..." Is there a more recent release than
4.0.2? And what is the latest version of the
After Dark CDEV?
AFC Pieter : The most current release is v 5.0
JGreenhut : Where can I find 5.0?
AFA GeneS : JGreenhut: Ask your dealer or have someone check
AppleLink. Apple hasn't released this to online
services for a couple of years. Sorry bout that.
AfterDark is 2.0x, except for Disney (2.0y). But
I doubt that it'll perform any better than
4.0.2. You just get a prettier CD audio DA.
NSTAR : I have a IIci w/8meg of memory and the system
freezes up on a very frequent basis. My Sys is
7.1 Pro.
BarryP13 : Ilene here, I have the same system config only
System 7.1. When does it freeze up? What apps?
What extensions?
NSTAR : It seems to freeze most often when copying.
BarryP13 : When was the last time you did drive
maintenance?
NSTAR : Ilene, it doesn't seem to matter, Barry I use
Times Two 2.0. Yes to disk or syquest.
BarryP13 : Well, in system 6 it would indicate Finder
corruption....hm...
AFA GeneS : NSTAR: I don't know about TimesTwo they had a
maintenance update, to 2.0.1. But I'd consider
reformatting without it as a test to see what
happens.
BarryP13 : Is times 2 an alsysis product?
AFA GeneS : (It's Golden Triangle.) I have it here. But
don't use it.
NSTAR : Gene, it's a driver level compression product.
AFA GeneS : Yes, NSTAR, I know.
BarryP13 : I believe that I read abaout problems with it,
maybe you should reformat (and I HATE to say
that)
JGreenhut : TimesTwo is currently at 2.0.1
NSTAR : For me it's a nessecity (sic)
BarryP13 : What is your formatter?
AFA GeneS : NSTAR: You have other compression options. You
need to try this as a test to see if it's
responsible. Ilene: TimesTwo is the formatter in
this case. It takes over from your SCSI driver
when it installs itself.
BarryP13 : I won't use driver level compression myself.
NSTAR : Gene: Suggestions on other cheap options?
AFA GeneS : For now, NSTAR, try starting with Extensions
off and if that doesn't fix it consider
reinstalling system software.and reformatting!
If space is tight, you might postpone not using
TimesTwo till you try other stuff. You can use
AutoDoubler, NowCompress or StuffIt SpaceSaver
to compress your data. They do not replace your
SCSI driver and can be removed easily.
NSTAR : With PM 5.0 and WP 3.0 they take up a lot of
room on my 80meg unformatted drive. But thanks,
over to the next.
BarryP13 : Times Two has a problem estimating how much
free space is left. If your externals are
formatted with Times2 THAT could be your problem
(remember, this is IleneH here)
AFA GeneS : (True, Ilene, but I hear 2.0 is better at that.)
BarryP13 : Earl also says it could be a SCSI problem, or
termination.
NSTAR : Gene: That's why I bought the upgrade.
AFA GeneS : NSTAR: Go the Extensions, system software, SCSI
route and see and if you have the bucks,
consider a bigger hard drive, you get a lot of
bang for the buck now. with those products.
BarryP13 : Make sure your SCSI cables are well shielded to.
NSTAR : Ilene, have tried with externals removed still
freezes when going to floppy.
BarryP13 : no that has not happened to me... yet
AFA GeneS : Okay, NSTAR, look over my first two suggestions
then and see what happens.
AFC Pieter : Yes, don't be foolish and skimp on the quality
of your cables. Good ones may cost more, but
they are worth it.
Alexis Kai : 1) Anyone have CD-ROM recommendations? How about
those 4X ones just released? 2) Is it possible
to connect to AOL at 2400 on a 9600 line (tech
live is closed)
AFC Pieter : Stick with a Toshiba 3401 or the Apple CDROM.
The Nec 3x is just not worth the cost. 4x will
be out next year or late this year
AFA GeneS : Alexis: Question 2: No, you need a 2400 line for
2400.
BarryP13 : Ilene here, Optical Access International has a
good drive, Apple is coming out w/ a new faster
drive...
Alexis Kai : I just got a catalog from TigerSoftware selling
the NEC 4X Pro. They are selling it for $999 or
something like that.
AFA GeneS : Is it out or just being advertised--sometimes
dealers jump the gun.
AFC Pieter : Well, according to Nec, it won't be out till
late summer, course they could be wrong.
BarryP13 : Present CDs don't make use of the faster CD
speed yet, so you'll see no gain yet.
JGreenhut : Apple is releaseing the Apple CD 300Plus..
Street \price $370 for external. The new drive
is not faster. Just cheaper.
BarryP13 : Ilene dislikes NECs.
AFA GeneS : The new drive, JGreenhut, is a NEC with a disk
tray instead of those silly caddies like a
regular audio CD player.
AFC Pieter : The new Chinnon 535 is also supposed to be very
nice. You can get either the Toshiba, Chinnon or
Apple 300 for about $450.
AFA GeneS : Apple 300 is less than $400 now It's the one I
have here. No complaints.
JGreenhut : Will the 300plus support Quicktime audio
recorings?
Alexis Kai : Whats the difference between access times and
transfer rates?
AFC Pieter : Access time is the time it takes to get to the
data, transfer rate is the time it takes to get
the data off the disk and into your Mac.
AFA GeneS : Access times refer to the time it takes to reach
a certain point on the disk to get data and
transfer rate is the throughput.
Erich : The CD 5.0 Software is to support The new
300plus when it comes out. It also has the new
CD remote.
CTI Dan : From a speed standpoint, I've had great luck
with FWB's CD Toolkit w/ my CD300.
AFA GeneS : I've noticed a smoother performance factor here
as well.
StewMiller : For the Apple CD you should check into the CD
ROM toolkit, but they also have a BMUG PD ROM
too now!
Pointoview : Does anyone know abouat the Futura II card by
E-Machines? I have a IISi and hear conflicting
reports about compatability. If it fits my Mac,
will it boost performance as well as give me 24
bit color?
AFC Pieter : We have a bunch of Futura SX Boards and they
seem to be pretty good, the early ones were a
bit buggy though.
Tim CAS : Does anyone else have problems with a centris
610 and a Radius Precision color pivot? I get
the strangest displays when using my radius
software with my Alice to Ocean CD but when I
run with no software for the Precision Color
Pivot it works fine. Radius Tech support sent
new SW but no help.
AFL Bear : I noticed that Alice didn't play too well on my
12" color Apple, either. :) It may be the
version of Player that they use.
Tim CAS : Is Player on their CD?
AFL Bear : I believe they are using the older Macromedia
Director player. It had issues with System 7 and
newer monitors.
Tim CAS : I see. Sounds plausible.
AFL Bear : The current versions are OK, but Alice shipped
before they were available. (I work for
Macromedia during the day.) ;) Sometimes.
Tim CAS : Well, when it works it blows me away. Can't
wait till I can afford some interactive CD
games.
AFL Bear : Anyway, that's the story as I hear it on the
Alice issue.
BarryP13 : (still Ilene) What do y'all recommend for an
accelerated 24-bit color board for a IIci?
AFA GeneS : Thunder/24.
BarryP13 : why?
AFA GeneS : I used it on a ci, and kept it when I got my
Quadra.
BarryP13 : Any others? Did Raster--ops just put out a new
cheap board>
AFC Pieter : Supposedly, they also just released a new board
that can cost up to $12,000.
BarryP13 : WHOOOOAAAA - that's a little steep for me!
AFA GeneS : Ilene: For lower cost, try a SuperMac Spectrum.
