  6.              What tweaks and tricks can we tell you about to 
  7.              get your Mac running hot. AFA GeneS, our genial 
  8.              chat host, will you please make the formal 
  9.              introductions?

  11. AFA GeneS  : Let me introduce the remainder of our cast of 
  12.              characters (and they are characters :) First is  
  13.              the lovely and talented AFC Carey....and 
  14.              then the inimitable AFC Pieter, wearing his Nike
  15.              shoes as usual.

  17. DBAldrich  : I just got a laserwriter and dumped a style 
  18.              writer. I am using a fax modem to receive 
  19.              faxes. The laserwriter wants appletalk on (of 
  20.              course).  My communications software (Mac330) 
  21.              works fine with appletalk on, but if I receive 
  22.              an incomming call with appletalk on the modem   
  23.              answers the phone and immediately hangs up.       
  24.              What is the difference between apple talk on and 
  25.              off? Could the fax modem software be getting 
  26.              confused?

  30. DBAldrich  : fax stf 2.2.3

  32. AFC Pieter : What else are you running? Any other inits?

  34. DBAldrich  : Yes, menuchoice, mactools (death) v3.0, 
  35.              silverlinning

  37. AFC Pieter : Have you tried running with just the STF stuff 
  38.              and your regular Apple inits?

  40. DBolden    : Sorry to butt in, but MenuChoice can be kinda 
  41.              buggy.

  43. DBAldrich  : I have not tried running with menuchoice off.        
  44.              But, I can receive faxes o.k with appletalk off.

  46. AFL Bear   : Is the modem in the modem port and the LW on the 
  47.              printer port?
  48.  
  49. DBAldrich  : yes

  51. AFL Bear   : That doesn't sound like it's related to 
  52.              AppleTalk, then.

  54. JGreenhut  : I have had many problems with fax stf 2.2.3. I 
  55.              recently upgrade to 3.0 which has solved MANY 
  56.              problems. 3.0 also includes Line Manager.

  58. Alco Oil   : I was going to suggest the upgrade to 3.0 as 
  59.              well. Are you sure you have the correct ports 
  60.              selected?

  62. DBAldrich  : I will try the upgrade, yes on the ports.

  64. AFA GeneS  : My only other suggestion here is that you also 
  65.              try running with all Extensions other 
  66.              than...your fax stuff off...as a test. 
  67.              What kind of Mac do you have?

  74. CTI Dan    : My question is this, What "tools" are out 
  75.              there to improve overall system performance  
  76.              In regard to the boot process, and overall 
  77.              system function, anything fantastic? ... GA

  79. Alco Oil   : Apple Personal diagnostics to test for 
  80.              problems. Then maybe Norton Utilities 2.0 and 
  81.              Mactools for other diagnostics and 
  82.              repairs...Now Utilities also.

  84. AFA GeneS  : Alco: It's not released yet...not due till March    
  85.              according to Apple. Maybe use MacCheck for now.

  87. AFC Carey  : RAMDoubler from Connectix to, well, double your 
  88.              RAM and DiskExpress II from Alsoft to Optimize 
  89.              your HD (Not an official endorsement) :)

  91. Alco Oil   : Does it slow you down?

  93. AFA GeneS  : (Alco: RAMDoubler will slow you down up to 5%, 
  94.              according to Connectix.)

  96. CTI Dan    : Perhaps if there was a way to allocate processor 
  97.              time to each task ...?? GA

  99. AFA GeneS  : Dan: Do you have a specific performance problem 
  100.              that you think needs fixing?

  102. CTI Dan    : Serial communications seems to be an issue... I 
  103.              don't get very good BG performace ...
  104.  
  105. AFA GeneS  : Dan: What kind of Mac do you have? And what do 
  106.              you see when you're doing serial stuff 
  107.              (printing, modeming?)

  109. CTI Dan    : Gene, Alink dies, and AOL slows to a crawl if I 
  110.              do anything other than watch AfterDark.

  112. AFA GeneS  : What kind of Mac, Dan? What System version?

  114. CTI Dan    : It's a Q650 w/ a Quad040, Sys 7.1, Accura 
  115.              14.4, 40mb RAM.

  117. AFA GeneS  : What version of AfterDark?

  119. CTI Dan    : The Star Trek edition (my only system folder 
  120.              toy) :>

  122. AFA GeneS  : Have you tried it with other Extensions off (yes 
  123.              even DayStar's)?

  125. CTI Dan    : <gasp> Yes, I have.  I've also tried with a 
  126.              variety of applications, it seems to relate to 
  127.              how much time the mac allocates to the comm 
  128.              program. I think :>

  130. AFA GeneS  : Can you disable the accelerator card to see if 
  131.              it's not affecting the process? I mean...there 
  132.              will be some slowdown, that's normal.
  133.  
  134. CTI Dan    : My feeling is that I should have system 
  135.              resources to spare.  I've tried w and w/o the 
  136.              Quad installed.
  137.  
  138. AFA GeneS  : The only additional thought: Reinstall system 
  139.              software. This is something, Dan, that will take 
  140.              more intensive diagnosis than we can do now.
  141.  
  142. AFL Bear   : I've had a troubling experience with it in that 
  143.              it seems to be related to machines dropping from 
  144.              the network and not coming back until after a 
  145.              restart. This happened on a variety of machines, 
  146.              but I haven't called tech support yet.

  148. AFA GeneS  : You mean RAMDoubler, John?
  149.  
  150. AFL Bear   : Yep. I proved it was the common denominator. 
  151.              Can't explain it, though.

  153. AFA GeneS  : Hmmm. I guess we better wake up Jorg and the 
  154.              crew at Connectix to work on that one.

  156. AFC Carey  : Ick, John. I have not had that problem :)

  158. AFL Bear   : I did, on machines that have to stay on 24 hours 
  159.              a day. It takes three to 8 hours to show up.

  161. Robert2242 : What is the best way to increase the memory to 
  162.              DAs? Or where to look for info.

  164. AFA GeneS  : In theory, you can't, since they have a fixed 
  165.              memory allocation  (20K).
  166.  
  167. Robert2242 : Run into "out of memory error" while previewing 
  168.              with DW 550C in a DA.

  178. AFA GeneS  : That should be okay. Can you try this with all 
  179.              Extensions off, other than the Global Village 
  180.              CDEV? Do I assume, here, that you are printing 
  181.              your fax with the DeskWriter, by the way?

  183. Robert2242 : Yes, still happens, but on 2nd attempt
  184.  
  185. AFA GeneS  : It could also be the printer driver not being 
  186.              compatible with something. Do you have the 
  187.              latest DW software?
  188.  
  189. Robert2242 : yes

  191. AFA GeneS  : (I print from the Global Village DA reasonably 
  192.              often to a StyleWriter II and LW Pro...no 
  193.              problem.) Also, do you have other applications 
  194.              open when you try this? Maybe there's not enough 
  195.              room for the printer driver to do its stuff.

  197. Robert2242 : It's only a print-preview that has problem

  199. AFA GeneS  : If we can't figure it out tonight, you might 
  200.              want to leave a message in the Global Village 
  201.              area on AOL. Keyword is Global. Their online 
  202.              support lady is there every couple of days or so 
  203.              to tack the messages. And they are very, very 
  204.              helpful.

  206. BarryP13   : (I thought I read about a conflict with Glob. 
  207.              fax and new DW software somewhere....)

  209. JGreenhut  : MacWeek 1/17/94 page 79: "Apple recently 
  210.              released a new version of the AppleCD Audio \
  211.              Player..."  Is there a more recent release than 
  212.              4.0.2? And what is the latest version of the 
  213.              After Dark CDEV?

  215. AFC Pieter : The most current release is v 5.0

  217. JGreenhut  : Where can I find 5.0?

  219. AFA GeneS  : JGreenhut: Ask your dealer or have someone check 
  220.              AppleLink. Apple hasn't released this to online 
  221.              services for a couple of years. Sorry bout that.  
  222.              AfterDark is 2.0x, except for Disney (2.0y). But 
  223.              I doubt that it'll perform any better than 
  224.              4.0.2. You just get a prettier CD audio DA.

  226. NSTAR      : I have a IIci w/8meg of memory and the system 
  227.              freezes up on a very frequent basis. My Sys is 
  228.              7.1 Pro.

  230. BarryP13   : Ilene here, I have the same system config only 
  231.              System 7.1. When does  it freeze up? What apps?  
  232.              What extensions?

  234. NSTAR      : It seems to freeze most often when copying.

  236. BarryP13   : When was the last time you did drive 
  237.              maintenance?

  239. NSTAR      : Ilene, it doesn't seem to matter, Barry I use 
  240.              Times Two 2.0.  Yes to disk or syquest.

  242. BarryP13   : Well, in system 6 it would indicate Finder 
  243.              corruption....hm...

  245. AFA GeneS  : NSTAR: I don't know about TimesTwo they had a 
  246.              maintenance update, to 2.0.1. But I'd consider 
  247.              reformatting without it as a test to see what
  248.              happens.

  250. BarryP13   : Is times 2 an alsysis product?

  252. AFA GeneS  : (It's Golden Triangle.) I have it here. But 
  253.              don't use it.

  255. NSTAR      : Gene, it's a driver level compression product.

  257. AFA GeneS  : Yes, NSTAR, I know.

  260.              maybe you should reformat (and I HATE to say 
  261.              that)

  267. BarryP13   : What is your formatter?

  269. AFA GeneS  : NSTAR: You have other compression options. You 
  270.              need to try this as a test to see if it's 
  271.              responsible. Ilene: TimesTwo is the formatter in 
  272.              this case. It takes over from your SCSI driver 
  273.              when it installs itself.

  275. BarryP13   : I won't use driver level compression myself. 
  276.  
  277. NSTAR      : Gene: Suggestions on other cheap options?

  279. AFA GeneS  : For now, NSTAR, try starting with Extensions 
  280.              off and if that doesn't fix it consider 
  281.              reinstalling system software.and reformatting! 
  282.              If space is tight, you might postpone not using 
  283.              TimesTwo till you try other stuff. You can use 
  284.              AutoDoubler, NowCompress or StuffIt SpaceSaver 
  285.              to compress your data. They do not replace your 
  286.              SCSI driver and can be removed easily.
  287.  
  288. NSTAR      : With PM 5.0 and WP 3.0 they take up a lot of 
  289.              room on my 80meg unformatted drive. But thanks, 
  290.              over to the next.
  291.  
  292. BarryP13   : Times Two has a problem estimating how much 
  293.              free space is left. If your externals are 
  294.              formatted with Times2 THAT could be your problem 
  295.              (remember, this is IleneH here)

  297. AFA GeneS  : (True, Ilene, but I hear 2.0 is better at that.)

  299. BarryP13   : Earl also says it could be a SCSI problem, or 
  300.              termination.

  302. NSTAR      : Gene: That's why I bought the upgrade.

  304. AFA GeneS  : NSTAR: Go the Extensions, system software, SCSI 
  305.              route and see and if you have the bucks, 
  306.              consider a bigger hard drive, you get a lot of 
  307.              bang for the buck now. with those products.

  309. BarryP13   : Make sure your SCSI cables are well shielded to.

  311. NSTAR      : Ilene, have tried with externals removed still 
  312.              freezes when going to floppy.

  314. BarryP13   : no that has not happened to me... yet

  316. AFA GeneS  : Okay, NSTAR, look over my first two suggestions 
  317.              then and see what happens.

  319. AFC Pieter : Yes, don't be foolish and skimp on the quality 
  320.              of your cables.  Good ones may cost more, but 
  321.              they are worth it.

  323. Alexis Kai : 1) Anyone have CD-ROM recommendations? How about 
  324.              those 4X ones just released? 2) Is it possible 
  325.              to connect to AOL at 2400 on a 9600 line (tech 
  326.              live is closed)

  328. AFC Pieter : Stick with a Toshiba 3401 or the Apple CDROM. 
  329.              The Nec 3x is just not worth the cost. 4x will 
  330.              be out next year or late this year

  332. AFA GeneS  : Alexis: Question 2: No, you need a 2400 line for 
  333.              2400.

  335. BarryP13   : Ilene here, Optical Access International has a 
  336.              good drive, Apple is coming out w/ a new faster 
  337.              drive...

  339. Alexis Kai : I just got a catalog from TigerSoftware selling 
  340.              the NEC 4X Pro. They are selling it for $999 or 
  341.              something like that.

  343. AFA GeneS  : Is it out or just being advertised--sometimes 
  344.              dealers jump the gun.

  346. AFC Pieter : Well, according to Nec, it won't be out till  
  347.              late summer, course they could be wrong.

  349. BarryP13   : Present CDs don't make use of the faster CD 
  350.              speed yet, so you'll see no gain yet.

  352. JGreenhut  : Apple is releaseing the Apple CD 300Plus..        
  353.              Street \price $370 for external. The new drive 
  354.              is not faster. Just cheaper.

  358. AFA GeneS  : The new drive, JGreenhut, is a NEC with a disk 
  359.              tray instead of those silly caddies like a 
  360.              regular audio CD player.

  362. AFC Pieter : The new Chinnon 535 is also supposed to be very 
  363.              nice. You can get either the Toshiba, Chinnon or 
  364.              Apple 300 for about $450.

  366. AFA GeneS  : Apple 300 is less than $400 now It's the one I 
  367.              have here. No complaints.

  369. JGreenhut  : Will the 300plus support Quicktime audio 
  370.              recorings?

  372. Alexis Kai : Whats the difference between access times and 
  373.              transfer rates?

  375. AFC Pieter : Access time is the time it takes to get to the 
  376.              data, transfer rate is the time it takes to get 
  377.              the data off the disk and into your Mac.

  379. AFA GeneS  : Access times refer to the time it takes to reach
  380.              a certain point on the disk to get data and 
  381.              transfer rate is the throughput.

  383. Erich      : The CD 5.0 Software is to support The new 
  384.              300plus when it comes out. It also has the new 
  385.              CD remote.

  387. CTI Dan    : From a speed standpoint, I've had great luck 
  388.              with FWB's CD Toolkit w/ my CD300.

  390. AFA GeneS  : I've noticed a smoother performance factor here 
  391.              as well.

  393. StewMiller : For the Apple CD you should check into the CD 
  394.              ROM toolkit, but they also have a BMUG PD ROM 
  395.              too now!

  397. Pointoview : Does anyone know abouat the Futura II card by 
  398.              E-Machines? I have a IISi and hear conflicting 
  399.              reports about compatability. If it fits my Mac, 
  400.              will it boost performance as well as give me 24 
  401.              bit color?

  403. AFC Pieter : We have a bunch of Futura SX Boards and they 
  404.              seem to be pretty good, the early ones were a 
  405.              bit buggy though.

  407. Tim CAS    : Does anyone else have problems with a centris 
  408.              610 and a Radius Precision color pivot? I get 
  409.              the strangest displays when using my radius 
  410.              software with my Alice to Ocean CD but when I 
  411.              run with no software for the Precision Color 
  412.              Pivot it works fine. Radius Tech support sent 
  413.              new SW but no help.

  415. AFL Bear   : I noticed that Alice didn't play too well on my 
  416.              12" color Apple, either. :) It may be the 
  417.              version of Player that they use.

  422.              Director player. It had issues with System 7 and
  423.              newer monitors.

  428.              before they were available. (I work for 
  429.              Macromedia during the day.)  ;) Sometimes.

  452.              that can cost up to $12,000.
